Tanzania safaris

Private Tanzania safari tours, from 2 to 10 days

For a first safari, plan on 5 to 7 days. That gives you time for all four northern parks without spending every day on the road. June to October is the most reliable season for game viewing, and January to March brings calving in the southern Serengeti. If you have less time, a shorter trip to Tarangire and Ngorongoro is still very rewarding, but you will miss the Serengeti.

You travel in a 4WD Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, clear windows for wildlife viewing and comfortable seats. The vehicle and guide are yours alone, so you set the pace at each sighting. Airport transfers are included, as are park fees, lodging and meals as listed on each trip. Choose budget, mid-range or luxury lodging, and see what each costs in our Tanzania safari cost guide.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Climb Kilimanjaro with a certified guide and a full crew

Kilimanjaro is a long walk rather than a technical climb, so you need no ropes or mountaineering experience. The real challenge is altitude, because Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). More days give your body more time to adapt, which is why the number of days matters more than the route name. For most first-time climbers, we recommend the 8-day Lemosho Route. For a lower price, the 7-day Machame Route is the classic choice, though it is busier.

Every climber has one guide, five porters and one cook. We are a partner of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP). We carry pulse oximeters to track your blood-oxygen levels, emergency oxygen cylinders and a Gamow bag, a portable pressure chamber for treating advanced altitude sickness. Climbs are private, so you pick your dates. If you would like company, we can check whether a trusted partner has a departure on your dates, at the same price.

Day trips

Day trips from Moshi for a free day before or after your trip

A day trip is an easy way to use a spare day. It also makes a gentle warm-up before a climb, and a relaxed way to recover after one. If you want to rest your legs, choose the hot springs. If you would like to see wildlife but have no time for a full safari, pick a park day trip, which is a long day but well worth it. Prices are per person with two sharing, from Moshi.

Combining trips

Can you combine a Kilimanjaro climb with a safari?

Yes, and the order is simple: climb first, then go on safari. Your legs get to rest in a vehicle, and you have the wildlife to look forward to all the way up the mountain. Allow at least a night in Moshi between the two, in case you come off the mountain tired.

Moshi works well as a base because it sits at the foot of Kilimanjaro, about an hour by road from Kilimanjaro International Airport, and the northern parks lie to the west. One team can plan the whole trip. Tell us your dates and we will price the climb and the safari together.

When to travel

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

You can travel year-round, but the main dry seasons are the easiest. June to October and January to March are the favorite months for both safaris and climbs, with clearer trails and good game viewing. The long rains in April and May bring muddy roads and wet trails, though parks are quieter and some lodging costs less. Your best month depends on what you want to see, so read our guides to the best time for a Tanzania safari and the best time to climb Kilimanjaro.

Common questions

Planning a trip to Tanzania: your questions answered

How much does a Tanzania safari or Kilimanjaro climb cost?

Our safaris start from $1,295 per person for 2 days and $4,230 for 7 days, at mid-range level with two sharing. Kilimanjaro climbs start from $1,600 for 5 days and $2,335 for 8 days. Traveling alone costs more per person, and larger groups cost less.

What is included in your prices?

Safari prices cover your private Land Cruiser, guide, park fees, airport transfers, lodging and meals as listed. Climb prices cover your crew, park fees, meals and camping or hut stays, as listed on each trip. International flights, visas, insurance and tips are not included. On our Zanzibar trips, the flight is included but the Zanzibar hotel is not.

Are your trips private or shared?

Our trips are private, so you choose your dates. We have no joining dates of our own. If you would prefer to share with others, we can check departures with trusted partners at the same price, with nothing added.

Is Kijaniwazi Tours a licensed tour operator?

Yes. We hold TALA Licence No. 545789 and are registered with BRELA under Reg. No. 715317. Our office is at the WMA Building, 3rd Floor, Office No. 4, Mawenzi Road, Moshi.

How far ahead should I book?

For travel from June to October, or around Christmas and New Year, try to book several months ahead, because popular lodges and Kilimanjaro dates fill first. Outside those times, a shorter notice can work, so it is worth asking.

Which airport should I fly into?

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which is about an hour by road from Moshi. Your airport transfers are included on Kilimanjaro climbs and on most safaris. On our Zanzibar trips, the arrival transfer is included.
