How much is the Materuni Waterfalls tour?
It starts from $165 per person with two people sharing, from Moshi. The price falls for larger groups.

If you have one free day in Moshi, this is the trip we would suggest. In about an hour, the dusty streets of town give way to banana groves and coffee bushes on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. A walk through the village brings you to a waterfall of about 80 meters (260 feet) falling into a cool pool, and afterward a local family shows you how coffee goes from the bush to your cup.
It is popular for good reason, and it is a very different side of Tanzania from anything you will see on safari. This guide explains what happens on the day, how hard the walk is, what is included and how it compares with other day trips from Moshi.
Materuni is a Chagga village on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, above Moshi. The Chagga are one of Tanzania's largest ethnic groups, and they have farmed these slopes for centuries, growing bananas and, since the colonial era, coffee. The day combines a guided walk to the waterfall with a visit to a family farm, where you roast and grind your own coffee and eat a home-cooked lunch. It is both a nature trip and a cultural one, and it is a very gentle way to spend a day before or after a bigger adventure.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| Around 8:30 a.m. | We collect you from your Moshi hotel for the drive of about an hour to Materuni village. |
| Morning | You meet your local guide and walk through farms and forest to the waterfall, stopping to look at plants and views. |
| Late morning | Time at the falls. You can swim in the cold pool if you are brave enough, or simply sit and enjoy the spray. |
| Midday | You walk back and enjoy a traditional Chagga lunch. |
| Early afternoon | The coffee tour: pick, peel, roast and grind the beans, and drink the result. |
| Mid-afternoon | We drive you back to your hotel in Moshi. |
Timings are a guide. On a private trip, you can start earlier or later, and your guide will adjust the plan around you.
Most people find it moderate. The walk usually takes about 30 to 50 minutes each way, on a path that rises and falls through farmland and forest, with some steep sections and steps near the end. You do not need to be especially fit, but you should be comfortable walking for an hour or two on uneven ground. The path can be slippery after rain, so wear shoes with a good grip, not sandals.
Young children and older travelers can usually manage with care, and your guide can slow right down. If you have knee problems, tell us when you book, as the steps can be hard on the way down. Local guides often know a gentler path, depending on the conditions.
Most travelers have never seen a coffee plant, let alone the work behind a morning cup. On the farm, you see the bushes growing among banana trees, then pick or sort the red cherries, remove the skins, roast the beans over a fire and pound them by hand in a wooden mortar. The family often sings as they work. Then you drink the coffee you have just made, usually with a sweet treat. Nobody needs to like singing or to be a coffee lover to enjoy it, and many people leave with a bag of beans.
Coffee has shaped this region, and it remains an important source of income for many families on the mountain. A visit like this is a simple way to support them directly. Lunch is often made with local ingredients, such as banana stew, and you can tell us about any dietary needs in advance.
Yes, usually, but the water is very cold because it comes down from the mountain. Many people just dip their feet, while a few jump in with a lot of noise. If you want to swim, bring swimwear and a small towel, and wear them under your clothes, since there is little privacy for changing. Rocks can be slippery, and the flow can be strong after heavy rain, so listen to your guide about where it is safe to go in.
The Materuni day trip starts from $165 per person with two people sharing. The price per person falls as your group grows, because the vehicle and guide cost is shared. These are prices from Moshi, and your final price is confirmed in your written quotation.

Tips are not included, and they are appreciated. Common guidance is about $15 to $25 per traveler per day for your guide.
You can visit all year. The falls are at their fullest in the rains, from about March to May and in November, but paths can be muddy. The drier months make for easier walking, and they offer the best chance of a clear view of Kilimanjaro, especially in the morning. Weekends can bring more local visitors, so a weekday may feel quieter if that matters to you.
They suit different moods. Materuni is the more active and cultural choice, with a walk, a waterfall and time with a local family. Chemka Hot Springs is about warm water and doing very little. Before a climb, either works, although we would not choose a hard walk the day before you start. After a climb, most people prefer Chemka. If you have two free days, do both. Our Moshi day trips guide compares all the options.
Bring comfortable shoes, a light rain jacket, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent and some small bills for tips and souvenirs. A warm layer helps on the mountain slopes in the morning, and swimwear and a towel are useful where you might swim. See a travel clinic before your trip, and ask about malaria protection, since Moshi and much of the surrounding lowland carry a risk.
