Tanzania Honeymoon Safaris: Romance in the Bush, Then the Beach

A couple dining beside a safari vehicle in the bush

Picture sundowners on the Serengeti plains, a private breakfast in the bush, and a few days later, your feet in warm Indian Ocean water. A Tanzania honeymoon combines two very different kinds of romance, and it is hard to beat.

This guide explains how to plan one, how long to stay in the bush and on the beach, and which of our trips make a good starting point.

Why Tanzania is a great honeymoon destination

The contrast is what makes it special. The bush brings early mornings, excitement and shared moments you will talk about for years, and Zanzibar gives you time to do nothing at all. Travel between them is simple, with a flight of under two hours from the mainland.

How to plan your Tanzania honeymoon safari

Split your time

Plan on about five to seven days on safari and three to five nights on Zanzibar. Too little time on the island is the most common mistake.

Travel privately

A private vehicle lets you set your own pace. All of our safaris are private by default.

Spend where it matters

If your budget has limits, consider a mid-range safari, with one or two special nights at a top camp.

The best honeymoon safari trips

Our combined safari and Zanzibar trips are the natural starting point. Your Zanzibar hotel is not included in these prices, so we can help you choose one to suit you.

Prices are at mid-range level, with two sharing. Luxury versions start from $6,900 for 8 days and $8,755 for 10 days.

Special touches for a Tanzania honeymoon

Tell us it is your honeymoon when you book. Some camps may offer private dinners, and a hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti makes a memorable extra. Availability varies, so we will confirm what is possible before you travel.

Best time for a Tanzania honeymoon

June to October is ideal, with dry weather for the bush and pleasant conditions on the coast. January to March also works well, with calving on the Serengeti plains and warm seas. April and May are the wettest months, and some coastal hotels close.

Choosing where to stay on Zanzibar

The north of the island, around Nungwi and Kendwa, has swimmable beaches at most tides. The east coast is quieter, with wide tidal flats. Stone Town is worth a night or a day trip for its history. See our Zanzibar holiday guide.

Your guide on a Tanzania honeymoon safari

Your driver-guide is with you from the first morning to the last drive, and much of what you see depends on them. Our guides have worked on Tanzania tours for 7 years. They are graduates of the College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka, and the National College of Tourism, and they hold certification from those institutions.

Planning your Tanzania honeymoon safari

June to October is the most reliable time for wildlife, and January to March brings calving in the south. See our best time guide and our packing list. See a travel clinic six to eight weeks before you leave. Malaria is a risk in the safari parks, so ask about tablets and bring repellent. Travel insurance is not included, and we strongly recommend a policy that covers medical care and evacuation.

Tips are not included in the price, and they are appreciated. Common guidance is about $15 to $25 per traveler per day for your guide, or about $40 to $50 per vehicle per day on a private safari, plus about $10 to $15 per guest per night for camp and lodge staff.

A sample Tanzania honeymoon itinerary

Here is one way a two-week honeymoon might look. Start with a night or two in Moshi or Arusha to recover from the flight. Spend two nights in Tarangire among the elephants, then one at Lake Manyara. Move on to the Serengeti for three nights, ideally in the area where the wildlife is that month. A night on the Ngorongoro rim comes next, with a game drive on the crater floor. Finish with four or five nights on Zanzibar, with time for Stone Town and a boat trip.

Shorter trips work too. Our 8-day and 10-day trips are good starting points, and we can add nights where you want them.

Adding Kilimanjaro to your honeymoon

Some couples like to start married life with a shared challenge. If that sounds like you, a Kilimanjaro climb followed by a safari and a beach stay is a remarkable trip. Allow at least two to three weeks in total, and be sure you both want to do it, as a summit attempt is hard work. Climb first, then let the safari and the beach be your reward.

How to plan a Tanzania honeymoon on a budget

A honeymoon does not need to be all luxury. Many couples stay mid-range for most of the trip and spend extra on one or two nights in a special camp or beach hotel. Traveling outside June to October can lower your lodging costs too. Tell us your total budget, and we will suggest where your money will make the biggest difference.

Practical tips for honeymoon travelers

  • Tell us your names and dates. Some lodges mark honeymoons with small touches, though it is never guaranteed.
  • Check rules on Zanzibar. It is a largely Muslim island, so dress modestly away from the beach.
  • Leave room in your schedule. Long flights and early drives are tiring.
  • Book early. The best small camps and beach hotels fill up, especially from July to September.

Choosing romantic camps and lodges

The best honeymoon camps tend to be small, with some distance between rooms, good views and attentive service. Tented camps in the bush feel far more intimate than big lodges, and you may hear lions at night from your bed. If this appeals, see our luxury safari guide. We will suggest specific camps in your quote, once we know your dates and budget.

Common mistakes when planning a safari honeymoon

  • Too little beach time. After early morning drives, you will want more than one night on Zanzibar.
  • Too many moves. Changing lodging every night is tiring. Stay at least two nights in some places.
  • Leaving it late. The best small camps and hotels fill up early.
  • Packing for the beach only. Early game drives can be cold, so bring warm layers.
  • Skipping insurance. It matters even more when you have spent so much on a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Comparing bush and beach weather through the year

Ideally, you want good conditions in both places. June to October works best overall, with dry parks and pleasant coastal weather. January and February are also very good, with warm seas and calving on the plains. March is hot and humid on the coast, and it starts to rain inland. April and May are the wettest months for both, and they are worth avoiding for a honeymoon, even though prices are low.

Is a safari honeymoon right for you?

A safari honeymoon suits couples who enjoy sharing an experience, and who are happy with early mornings for part of the trip. If you mainly want to relax, spend most of your time on the beach, with a shorter safari. Our 3-day safari can be added to a longer stay on Zanzibar, and we can arrange a flight between them. If you want a bigger adventure, you could climb Kilimanjaro together first.

How much does a Tanzania honeymoon cost in total?

Start with the safari. Our 8-day trip starts from $4,490 per person at mid-range level, and from $6,900 at luxury level, including your flight to Zanzibar. To that, add your international flights, your visa, insurance, tips and your Zanzibar hotel, which can vary widely. A few extra nights on the island can be surprisingly affordable, particularly outside the busiest months. Ask us for a full quote that includes all of this, so that you can see the total.

What to tell us when you plan your honeymoon

  1. Your wedding date and how long you can be away.
  2. How much of your time you would like in the bush and on the beach.
  3. Your total budget, even if it is only a rough figure.
  4. Whether you prefer tented camps or lodges.
  5. Any must-haves, such as a balloon flight or a private dinner.

With this, we can send you a tailored itinerary and a written quote.
