Tanzania Wildlife Day Trips: Can You Really See Safari Animals in One Day?

Giraffes on the plains below Mount Meru

Not everyone has time for a full safari. Perhaps you have one spare day after your Kilimanjaro climb, or a work trip with a free weekend. The good news is that you can see wild elephants, giraffes and much more in a single day from Moshi or Arusha. The catch is that the road comes with it, and some choices spend more of your day driving than watching animals.

This guide gives you an honest comparison of the three realistic options, and it explains when a day trip is enough and when a short safari would serve you better.

Which is the best wildlife day trip from Moshi or Arusha?

From Moshi, Arusha National Park is the easiest choice, at about 1 to 2 hours by road, although it offers fewer big animals. For big herds, go to Tarangire, particularly from June to October, but expect a long day, with about 3 to 4 hours on the road each way from Moshi. Lake Manyara is a smaller park with lots of variety, and it is about 4 hours from Moshi, so it is a better choice from Arusha. If at all possible, we would take at least one overnight, which is why we offer a 2-day safari.

Wildlife day trips compared

Park From Moshi From Arusha Known for From, per person
Arusha National Park About 1 to 2 hours Under 1 hour Giraffes, colobus monkeys, walking safaris $265
Tarangire About 3 to 4 hours About 2 hours Elephants, baobabs $265
Lake Manyara About 4 hours About 2 hours Forest, birds, hippos $265

Prices are per person with two people sharing, from Moshi. Drive times are approximate, and they depend on your hotel and on conditions.

Arusha National Park day trip: closest and easiest

This is the park to choose if you want to spend more time in the park than on the road. You can look for giraffes, buffalo, zebras and colobus monkeys, see Ngurdoto Crater and the Momella Lakes, and even walk with an armed ranger. Lions and elephants are rarely part of the experience here. On a clear day, the views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro can be superb. For many visitors, it is a peaceful and beautiful introduction to Tanzania's wild places. See our Arusha day trips guide.

Tarangire day trip: the best for big game

If you want one day of classic safari, this is the most rewarding option. From about June to October, the Tarangire River draws in huge numbers of elephants, along with giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and lions. Baobab trees give the landscape its character. The trade-off is the drive. You leave Moshi very early, reach the park in the morning, spend the middle of the day on a game drive and return after dark. It is long but very doable. From November to May, many animals leave the park, so we would suggest another choice then. See our Tarangire safari guide.

Lake Manyara day trip: variety in a small park

Lake Manyara is a good fit from Arusha, or for anyone who enjoys birds and scenery. In a few hours, you pass through thick forest with baboons and monkeys, open floodplain and hippo pools, below the tall Rift Valley wall. Tree-climbing lions are famous here, but do not expect them. From Moshi, the drive is long for a single day, and you may prefer an overnight stay. See our Lake Manyara safari guide.

Can you visit the Serengeti or Ngorongoro in a day?

The Serengeti is too far to reach sensibly by road in a day, and flying in is possible but costly. You should be wary of anyone advertising a road day trip there. Ngorongoro Crater is about four to five hours from Moshi each way, which makes for a very long day with little time on the crater floor. We suggest going overnight instead. Our 2-day safari combines Tarangire with the crater, and our 4-day safari includes the Serengeti.

Is a one-day safari worth it?

Yes, if one day is all you have. You will see real wildlife with a knowledgeable guide, and many people find it a highlight of their trip. But it is honest to say what you miss. The best light and much of the predator activity come at dawn and dusk, and on a day trip you are usually on the road at those times. If you can stretch to a single night near the park, you get both an evening and a morning game drive, and it can feel like a very different trip.

What to expect on a wildlife day trip

You leave early with your guide in a 4WD Land Cruiser, with snacks and water on board. Your guide will open the pop-up roof once you enter the park, so you can stand up and look out. You will stop for a picnic lunch, usually at a marked site, and you can stay as long as park rules and the drive home allow. Keep your voice down near animals and stay in the vehicle unless your guide says otherwise. You will return in the evening, tired and happy.

Group size Price per person
1 traveler $445
2 travelers $265
3 travelers $210

They are graduates of the College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka, and the National College of Tourism, and they hold certification from those institutions. Tips are not included, and they are appreciated. Common guidance is about $15 to $25 per traveler per day for your guide.

Best time for a wildlife day trip

June to October is the most reliable period, especially in Tarangire. From November to May, Arusha National Park and Lake Manyara remain rewarding, particularly for birds. The heaviest rains, from about April to May, can make some tracks difficult. Check our guide to the best time for a safari.

What to bring on a wildlife day trip

Bring a warm layer for the early start, a hat, sunscreen, binoculars, a camera with a zoom lens, snacks you enjoy and some small bills for tips. Wear neutral colors, because dark blue and black can attract tsetse flies in some parks. See a travel clinic before your trip for advice on malaria.
